During the 1980’s I had got quite involved in taking photos of railway
scenes. It may seem strange that it took me a very long time before I
thought ‘why not paint them as well’. One reason I was against it was
that engines push you towards fine details in your paintings, and I was
trying to do the opposite. I still try to avoid that as much as possible.
